Cox Smith enjoys a rich history dating back to the early 1930s when the firm was founded in San Antonio as Seeligson, Cox and Patterson. Many of our client relationships began during this era and have endured as a result of the trust, loyalty and responsive service upon which Cox Smith built its reputation.
The firm was originally founded to meet the business needs of many prominent Oklahoma oil and gas families and independent oil companies who relocated to San Antonio. As the city changed and expanded, the firm also evolved and grew to meet its clients’ changing needs. The firm was renamed Cox & Smith Incorporated in 1979.
As the right opportunities for expansion presented themselves, the firm extended its physical footprint in key geographic markets and welcomed knowledgeable teams of attorneys. Cox Smith’s employment and employer rights practice area grew considerably in 1998 when eight attorneys from Foster, Heller & Kilgore joined the firm. Another significant milestone occurred in September 2004 when Cox & Smith and the lawyers of Matthews and Branscomb’s San Antonio office combined to form Cox Smith Matthews Incorporated, creating the largest business law firm in the region.
Home to numerous corporations and business entities, San Antonio is now recognized as one of the top places to conduct business in Texas. And Cox Smith is the firm many of the city’s leading businesses turn to for legal counsel. Today, Cox Smith employs 130 attorneys with diverse experience in 17 primary practice areas and more than 25 areas of specialization.
Our experience spans all of the key Texas markets, with growing offices in Austin, Dallas and McAllen. Our Dallas office, established in 2005, provides the firm with a substantial amount of corporate legal work as well as continued expansion of our renowned bankruptcy, litigation and transactional practice areas. We have had a presence in the Valley area for many years to serve the area's leading financial institutions and corporations with their employment, bankruptcy and litigation needs. And our Austin office is highly regarded for its banking, financial services and technology industry experience. Our close proximity to the state's capital and lawmakers enables our attorneys to stay well informed on legislative developments.
Undoubtedly, Cox Smith is still known for the energy and natural resources experience upon which the firm was founded, but it is now widely recognized for its industry experience and legal capabilities serving multinational companies and small businesses alike. The firm has a presence in strategic cities throughout Texas and looks forward to continuing its expansion – and maintaining its long-lasting client relationships – in the decades to come.
